Big Terrible

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

If you like good old rock n’ roll, then do yourself a favor and check out Big Terrible. They just played at World Cafe on Saturday for their album release and it was a lively show to say the least! Lots of great music.

I collect animals

Revisiting the genius of Animal Collective. This is one of those bands which you need to explore to discover that you really love them. Every song is coated with noise and nonsense until about 2 minutes and 50 seconds in and GLORY hits. (2 minutes and 50 seconds is true for In the Flowers, below) But you get the point.

HOLY CRAP. YEAH.

I am so far out of this universe right now, high on Tekkonkinkreet and Blitzen Trapper. Tekkonkinkreet was freaking amazing. Japanese animation is beyond incredible (not so much a fan of manga or anime but it just goes to show you have to give everything a chance!). Directed by Michael Arias, this film is jam packed with impossible visuals, intense plot, and of course great music by Plaid (see earlier post). I can’t describe how fulfilling this movie was.

Currently listening to Blitzen Trapper, a mixture of country, indie rock, and electronic. What separates this band from others in my ears are the fast paced chord changes. I’m an impatient listener so this was just perfect.

For those of you trying to make your own music, Blitzen Trapper released their first three albums on their own, using their own home built studio. Sound quality not all that great, but look where it got them. Use what you have and make something of it!

Grizzly Bear w/ Here We Go Magic

grizzly_bear_album

I went to Grizzly Bear at the troc on Tuesday. Bass player was insane, drum beats made the show, and “Their voices were like mermaids”. And yet, it’s two days after the concert and all I have been listening to is Tunnelvision and Fangela by Here We Go Magic, the opening band.

MOVE TO THIS-

Martin De Thurah

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

I just discovered Martin De Thurah’s genius today while being a bum on the internet. And now I don’t want to be a bum anymore and go out and make movies! Martin De Thurah is a Denmark based director. His pieces are filled with lights and darks, interesting colors, and fantastical elements. Summary: it’s blowing my mind.

Mykonos

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

This isn’t particularly new, but Fleet Foxes’ music video for Mykonos is just perfect for summer. Animated construction paper cut-outs, dreamy colors (and music!). I think I’m going to get back into a graphic design groove soon :)
