I am so far out of this universe right now, high on Tekkonkinkreet and Blitzen Trapper. Tekkonkinkreet was freaking amazing. Japanese animation is beyond incredible (not so much a fan of manga or anime but it just goes to show you have to give everything a chance!). Directed by Michael Arias, this film is jam packed with impossible visuals, intense plot, and of course great music by Plaid (see earlier post). I can’t describe how fulfilling this movie was.

Currently listening to Blitzen Trapper, a mixture of country, indie rock, and electronic. What separates this band from others in my ears are the fast paced chord changes. I’m an impatient listener so this was just perfect.

For those of you trying to make your own music, Blitzen Trapper released their first three albums on their own, using their own home built studio. Sound quality not all that great, but look where it got them. Use what you have and make something of it!

Grizzly Bear w/ Here We Go Magic

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I went to Grizzly Bear at the troc on Tuesday. Bass player was insane, drum beats made the show, and “Their voices were like mermaids”. And yet, it’s two days after the concert and all I have been listening to is Tunnelvision and Fangela by Here We Go Magic, the opening band.

This isn’t particularly new, but Fleet Foxes’ music video for Mykonos is just perfect for summer. Animated construction paper cut-outs, dreamy colors (and music!). I think I’m going to get back into a graphic design groove soon :)

California Guitar Trio

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Have to get back to clean guitar goodness. Jon and Mark were playing some tunes on the guitar at work today, and I really liked when Jon played Classical Gas. After plugging in Classical gas to *Pandora (*see first blog post ever made on here!), I came across California Guitar Trio.

The picture is deceiving. This is a 2 guy gig. Plaid is a UK based band created by Andy Turner and Ed Handley. Their music is created using computer technology…and I think they must have an alien friend helping them out too (hence the extra dude in the picture, i think). Anyways, just discovered them today when I was looking at the opening credits for Tekkonkinkreet and all I could focus on was the music. Enjoy!

Sweet Plantain

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Sweet Plantain is a string quartet that plays with improvisational flare, combining their knowledge of classical music with jazz and latin genres. Heard of this via my viola teacher who is a friend of one of the violinists, Romulo Benavides.

Thomas Newman

To start, this is probably one of the most important posts of my blog! I love every soundtrack ever done by this guy! I first heard his music while watching A Series of Unfortunate Events and then I bought the soundtrack immediately!
